Rebels Beneath a Sky of Ash
Posted on Friday, February 15th, 2008 at 11:56 am.Spectre is an incredibly ambitious project.
Sometimes, I admit that I look at the sheer complexity of it and wonder what the hell I’m thinking. But then I look at the scene break-downs and every time, without fail, things begin to look manageable again. Considering the epic nature of the story, the script is pretty well contained. We start on a wasted battlefield the night after a huge battle. Most likely it’ll be littered with lots of CG bodies courtesy of programs like Poser, and the skies will be loaded with digital storm clouds via Vue. Then from there we’re into the forest for most of the movie with a very notable stop at a waterfall. (Hey, does anybody out there know of some good waterfalls in Nor. Cal?)
The team that is pulling this movie together is one that I’m very excited about. So far, none of us are industry professionals who do this for a living. By day I masquerade as an escalations engineer for Linux-based surveillance technology (I know… snore), but by night and weekend I get to play in this world we’re creating. Chris, the DP on this movie is a lawyer by trade, but is also a well-respected camera expert on DVinfo.net. Vicky, our Art Director, is a grad student. A grad student with a scary knowledge of swords and martial arts. Our 1st AD teaches kids.
Some people might question what right this rag-tag team has in putting together such an ambitious project. All I have to say is that we have EVERY right, and there’s no better project to attempt than one that is difficult and just beyond our means initially. We dreamt big in the early stages, and now we’re going to go for it. Everyone on board so far has commented that they’ve been wanting to do a project like this but just never did. Now is the time. We’re Rebels, children of the Stu Maschwitz way of filmmaking. And we’re here to make this movie.
BTW – there has been an outstanding response to the casting call we put up. About 200 people have applied for the various roles. That’s great, except now we need to parse through all the head-shots, resumes, and setup the auditions.
All part of the fun.

Doesn’t Yosemite have falls? Should be able to secure a filming permit me thinks. Or check this…

I’ll ask some of my film friends if they know of any worthy of this endeavor.
Please hold…
